GROUP THERAPY

 

Our Group Therapy Program provides a compact blend of psycho educational information, psychodynamic therapy, video programming and process groups.  The emphasis on relapse prevention, and an introduction to the 12 Steps, identifying relapse triggers and family roles.  At NBD we believe that it is important to couple therapy with drug detoxification to achieve a drug free life.

Summary of Group Therapy Curriculum

Session A

Psycho-Educational and Process: addiction is not a moral weakness, a character defect, patients are not bad people, but have a disease / 5 components of Holistic Disease (emotional, spiritual, psychological, physical and biological) / stages of addiction / progressive disease concept

Session B

Psycho-Educational and Process:  role play / denial and effects of drugs and alcohol on body / pharmacology

Session C

Psycho-Educational and Process: surrender, acceptance, self will vs. Higher Power / the concept of H.A.L.T is taught. (4 areas of life where we need to remain balanced - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) / “Tooth Brush Therapy”- the (5) things to do everyday to stay sober. (go to meetings, talk to other addicts/alcoholics, read fellowship literature, pray, make gratitude list)

Session D

Psycho-Educational and Process: introduction to 12 Step philosophy / the role of individual therapy in early recovery / 12 Step information and education

Session E

Psycho-Educational and Process: AA/NA slogans such as “Easy Does it”, “Think, Think, Think”, “One Day at a Time” etc. / how to communicate and resolve conflict with friends, family without losing sobriety / The Serenity Prayer

Session F

Psycho-Educational and Process: avoiding old people, places, and things /relapse triggers / relapse warning signs, 4 forms of relapse / mapping of high risk situations

Session G

Psycho-Educational and Process: Step 2 is covered / willingness / being teachable / Rule 2 - "Don't Take Your Self Too Seriously" / Step 3 / “We Agnostics” / “Higher Power” concept

   

Session H

Psycho-Educational and Process:  meetings, “Where and When” / 90 meetings in 90 days / sponsorship / home group / self-centeredness / the book “King Baby" is distributed and discussed / discussion of self-centered traits

Session I

Psycho-Educational and Process: anger management / feelings - what are they? / where and what are mine? / properly communicating feelings / “King Baby" book review

Process-Role Play: "I" statements” / listening skills 

 

Session J

Psycho-Educational and Process: relational issues / relationships / making decisions in relationships / getting professional help in your relationships

Wrap-up: patients share where they are in recovery / sponsorship in program re-assessed / patients are asked if they are able to integrate what they have learned

Session K

Psycho-Educational and Process:  resentments - as outlined in the AA Big Book / importance of addressing resentments in recovery / Fear - "An Evil and Corroding Thread" 

Session L

Psycho-Educational and Process:  spiritual bankruptcy in addiction / list beliefs, values, attitudes / how have you deviated from your own values and beliefs? / final thoughts and recommendations
